Autumn Term 1 2022
The end of a really busy half term,
In maths we have the Year 3 have been learning about formal column addition with no carrying. After half term we will start learning formal subtraction with no exchange. Year 4 have spent the week learning 4 digit subtraction, starting with one exchange and then and then developing this to more than one exchange.
We have started our new English unit based on the silent film Ruckus, based in the American Mid West. We have performed freeze frames, developed character descriptions and then on Friday we have created wanted posters based upon Frank or Jesse’s characteristics, ‘inside and out’. We have revised fronted adverbials and expanded noun phrases.
Within the foundation subjects, in French we have been finding out how to say, “How are you?” We have continued to investigate the Ancient Egyptians through pictures and in Art recreated Van Gogh’s “Starry Night”. We have looked at how we can classify animals in science, for instance, woodland and ocean habitats.

Yet other busy week in Class Tamar!
In maths we have the Year 4 have been doing column subtraction and today we recapped exchanging. Year 3 have been taking away 1’s and 10’s crossing a hundred. We need to keep learning our tables.
At the beginning of the week we wrote our letters to the Eden Project in best and Mr Gargan posted them on Wednesday. We have written letters (as Big Billy Goat Gruff) to persuade the exterminators to get rid of the Troll. We included, Dear Sir / Madam, why we were writing, expanded noun phrase, fronted adverbials, paragraphs and Yours faithfully.
Within computing we have been identifying adverts and pop-ups as part of internet safety. At the beginning of the week we looked carefully at artefact in our history to find out about life in the past. We developed our skills in team games with Argyle. French, we asked each others name as well as saying goodbye. On Tuesday we went on an invertebrate hunt (animals without a back bone) and explored the different habitats they live in. Finally we have been looking at the rights of the child and the United Nations charter. WE decided that education was a good thing.

Another busy week in Class Tamar!
For English, we have been drafting persuasive letters to the Eden Project and using paragraphs to organise our ideas. We have also continued to look at fronted adverbials that suggest ‘how often’ for example, Daily, we read at home.
In maths we have continued with 99 club and some of us have moved up. Year 4 have been adding, with and without exchange up to a thousand, whilst Year 3 have been adding ones and ten’s.
Within art we have been looking at the life of Vincent Van Gogh. We have found out that he was born in Holland but went to paint in Arles, France. Sadly he cut part of his right ear and when he was 37 he shot himself. He did not sell one painting in his life time. In RE we acted out the temptation of Adam and Eve and within music continued to learn the Bob Marley song, ‘Three Little Birds’. We used glockenspiels to accompany the song.
This week we have had two different lessons. One was by the author Mel Taylor-Bessent about how she gets inspiration to write books and her perseverance. We also celebrated National Poetry Day on Thursday.
This week has been ‘anti bullying week’ and we have found out what to do and how we can make each other happier by giving compliments.

We have had an excellent week of learning.
In English, following on from our performances and developing settings and characters we drafted openings to the traditional tale of ‘The Three Billy Goats Gruff and used or expanded noun phrases. We then identified features which helped us identify these in our partners writing. We have also identified unfamiliar vocabulary in the text and completed comprehensions where we answer questions about what we have read. On Thursday we looked at ‘fronted adverbials’ that are time words, for example, Yesterday, we all read our own books.
In maths, Year 3 have moved onto addition and subtraction, building on our place value knowledge. Year 4 have been rounding to 10’s, 100’s and 1000’s. We have also continued our ‘99’ club where we are using our facts quickly. We need to get full marks three times in a row to move on.
In art we looked at a picture by Vincent Van Gogh that was discovered by X Rays in Scotland hidden behind another painting. We looked carefully and justified our opinions whether we liked different parts of the paintings or not. We discovered that we have different opinions. We used maps to identify were Egypt was and picture evidence to make judgements like ‘it rains a lot in Egypt’. In RE we sequenced the Bible creation story.
Within computing we looked at the topic of cyberbullying (using digital technology including phones to threaten someone more than once), deciding whether or not different scenarios were cyberbullying or not. We know that if we experience cyberbullying we should:
- Stop!
- Tell a trusted adult.
On Friday we had a fantastic day at the Eden Project. Mr Gargan and Mrs Welch were very, very proud of us. We looked at puzzling plants and what makes plants different. We went around the tropical biome and classified different plants, stems, roots etc After lunch we were very lucky to see a robot that could talk , move and interact. At the beginning of the week we sadly thought about the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II.
We have continued to develop our use of number lines and comparing numbers up to a hundred and a thousand. With number lines it was easier to label the whole number line which helped us identify the missing numbers. Year 4 looked at Roman Numerals on Friday. We have had a real focus on presentation and making our learning as neat as possible.
Carrying on with the Three Billy Goats Gruff, in groups we all did our performances. Again we have been trying to make our learning as neat as we possibly can and trying to join our handwriting. In grammar we have focussed on adverbs, which add to the verb (doing word) for example, nicely, quickly and slowly. We have hunted for adjectives (describing words) in different texts.
In French we have been learning to say hello at different times of the day as well as ‘salut’ as an informal greeting. We have started to learn about living things (organisms) in our science and what they need to live, for example, food and water. We sorted them according to different criteria like, flying and non-flying, slimy and not slimy and eyes and no eyes. In games we worked on our teamwork and communicating with our friends.

A reminder that spellings need to be learnt for each Thursday for the test and the maths home learning is to be completed for Thursdays as well.

Week ending 16th September
This week in maths we continued to learn about place holders and partitioning numbers in different ways. We have also used number lines and carefully labelled them.
For our English we started ‘The Three Billy Goats Gruff’, sequencing the story and then using tone and intonation to tell the story. We are going to make puppets on Tuesday and perform to Class Plym. Our focus in grammar has been expanded noun phrases where we use an adjective, comma, adjective and then a noun. Our class has used inference, using clues in the text, when thinking about our class book ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.’
In other subjects we have been introducing our new topics and assessing what we know already. On Thursday class members who wanted to become councillors read their manifestos to the class and on Friday we held a secret ballot. We now have two Year 3 and two Year 4 councillors.
A reminder please, that we must read every day to an adult, and that our adult must record this our reading record book. We have maths home learning this week as well as our spelling that need to be learned for our test each Thursday.

Welcome back to our class.
In maths, we have been looking at number lines and counting in hundreds and thousands. We have used place holders and partitioning in our number learning.
We have been using expanded noun phrases and conjunctions in our writing. A conjunction joins two sentences together so they are more interesting.
Sadly, after the death of Queen Elizabeth 11 we thought about her reign and shared ideas in our PSHE book. We have had PE and designed and made book marks which are being laminated.
In all our learning we are underlining our titles and date with a ruler and at the end we are self-assessing and thinking about our next steps.
Mr Gargan and Mrs Welch expect us to read at home every night and that an adult writes in our reading record book. In addition we have maths home learning on a Friday as well as spellings, these need to back in for Thursday. We have been asked to bring in a book from home on Wednesdays.
We have settled in to our new class really well and enjoyed our week.
