Autumn 1 2022

Friday 21st October
We have had a busy last week finishing our units.
In art today we finished our final piece in the style of a Cornish painter and evaluated it.
For science we completed our field guide of the local area, using what we had learnt about classification in the unit to put animals in the correct places.
In computing we used a final spreadsheet to work out food for a party using a budget. We had to input our formula and use copy and paste.
We continued with our violin work and did some improvising as well as improving our bow technique.
We continued to discuss themes and characters in our English book Millions.

Homework
There is no spelling or maths homework.
Please continue to read as often as you can. Minimum 5 but would love to see at least 10.

Friday 14th October
We have had a busy week.
We were building up our football skills with Argyle at the beginning of the week.
Our new book 'Millions' has really caught our attention in English. The boys have just got a big bag of money and we have been predicting what they will do with it.
For computing today we used a spreadsheet to help us to solve the problem of which pocket money option would be best. We found out that the one we thought would be the worst was the best and our spreadsheet saved us hours of calculations.
We have begun our final piece in art. We looked at our trials from last week and chose the one we liked best. Next week we can layer by adding paint onto what has dried.

Friday 7th October
In maths we have been doing short division sometimes called bus stop. This was a quick method.
We have picked some fruit form the trees in the garden and will be bringing some home tonight.
In art we are currently making a mini trial piece of each of our artists: Sue Read and Alfred Wallis. We will then decide which one we will make into our final piece. We are enjoying using powder paint again but having to be careful how much white and black we use when making shades.
In science we learnt about microorganisms. Some are harmful and some are helpful and some are both. You can find mould in cheese.
In English we took part in two live lessons this week. One was with an author who told us about her new book and inspiration. The other was a live poetry lesson to celebrate National Poetry Day.

What a fantastic way to end the week. We had a brilliant trip to the Eden Project. You should all be really proud of your children and they should be proud of themselves.  Our guide praised the children for their ability to empathise with others, their conduct as we went around, their knowledge of plants and their interest in everything around them. We turned ourselves into three tribes and then went into the rainforest biome to see how we could survive with no equipment - having to use plants for food, medicine and shelter/materials. Each tribe then presented to the others what they had found out. We just had time to say hi to a robot before we had to go home.

Friday 23rd September
We have had a fun and varied week this week.
In Wildtribe we learnt about the fire triangle - fuel, oxygen and heat. We started our own fires with flint and steel and cooked toast on them.
For PE we did problem solving with hula hoops. We had to move it across the playground without using our hands. This took a lot of respect and responsibility working together.
In science we continued learning about the classification of animals and how the platypus baffled scientists and took over 100 years for them to agree on what type of creature it is.
In music on Thursday we recapped the songs we played last week by plucking but changed the position of the violin so we made use of the chin rest. Then we learnt how to hold the bow and had our first go at using it on the strings.

Please ensure all forms have been returned to the office in order to go on the Eden trip.
Friday 16th September
In PE we did netball and problem solving.
We took part in our first Wild Tribe session and we made leaf fossils and named the different parts of the leaf. We also made a leaf identifying resource for everyone to use.
We looked at the standard system of classifying living things in Science - the Linnaean system. We then used this to classify a living thing and found it's scientific name.

Welcome/welcome back to Class Lynher. Here each week you will find out some of the things we have been up to and a reminder of when homework is due.
Please can all children bring their PE kit in and leave it on their pegs at the start of the week and take home at the end of the week if it needs washing.
We will also be doing wild tribe on a Tuesday afternoon. For this, your child will need to bring to school in a bag a long sleeve top, long trousers/leggings, suitable shoes and waterproofs if necessary.
In English we watched a short video about the pilot Jacqueline Auriol. We have done some research on her and are looking at biographies.
For PE we did handball and played games against each other in teams using EforL and confidence.
In art we were learning and talking about the art of Sue Read and Alfred Wallace who have both made art based on Cornish places.
For science we were classifying animals into different groups based on their characteristics.
